Slovenian World Congress 2007

15 October 2007 When I was invited to attend the V. Slovenski Svetovni Kongres, znanstvenikov in gospodarstvenikov iz sveta in Slovenije (5th Slovenian World Congress of Scientists and Businessmen Abroad and in Slovenia) I was happy to accept, particularly as I was in Ljubljana working on our ISSV Thezaurus projects at the time.

The theme of SSK 2007 was science and  business, the overall aim and mission of the SSK being to make connections and links between Slovenes working abroad in related fields, and Slovenia. It was the fifth such congress, covering areas of medicine, architecture, economy, and music. The mission of the SSK is to draw together Slovenes living in Slovenia and Slovenes abroad, to their mutual benefit. The aim is exchange of knowledge and expertise, dialogue, and sharing. Ultimately the intention is to bring together and draw on the expertise and loyalty of highly achieving Slovenes who have reached in their field a high level of success and recognition in Europe, Great Britain and USA. I am not a scientist or a business woman, however I expected to hear a great deal of interest and gain some valuable information about Slovenia’s role in the world today.

SSK Konferenca 2007

Konferenca znanstvenikov in gospodarstvenikov iz sveta in Slovenije, 2007
12. oktober 2007
Moje ime je Aleksandra (Saša) Ceferin, Živim v Avstraliji od leta 1950. V Melbournu sem uvedla pouk slovenščine v srednje šole do maturitetne ravni in ga vodila nad 30 let.

Prezentacije so bile temeljite in izčrpne, v okviru treh glavnih sklopov: Raziskovalne politike in njihovo uresničevanje, Izkušnje slovenskih znanstvenikov v tujini, ter Prenos znanja slovenske univerze.

Proposal: Slovenia House in Ljubljana/ Slovenska hiša

8 July 2007 The Slovenian government has established permanent dialogue with Slovenes around the world. In historic legislation in 2006 (Ur.I. RS st. 43/2006) the legal framework for cooperation with Slovenes abroad was enacted for the first time.  A special consulting body called the Council for Slovenes around the World – Svet za Slovence po svetu –  is chaired by the Prime Minister of Slovenia, Janez Janša. The Council consists of nineteen members, thirteen living outside of Slovenia. Representatives were nominated by the communities and duly elected. A meeting will be held each year in summer and more as needed.
In Australia two representatives Peter Mandelj and Florjan Auser have been appointed. Consultations with the Prime Minister Janez Janša and other ministers have been held and representatives have spoken in the Parliament.
Aleksandra Ceferin has prepared a paper, which was in parts read by Peter Mandelj to the assembled members at the inaugural session  of the Council on 3 July 2007 in Ljubljana. The paper presents the situation of the post-migrant generations of the descendants of Slovenian emigrants, questions the aims and substance of Slovenian emigrant publications and presents two main proposals:
1. a major Slovenian web site
2. establishment of Slovenia House in Ljubljana

Note: The paper was presented in Slovenian with an English version for publication.
